Lab work don't stop

Following the two-day pharmaceutical conference, we continued our experiment with andrographolide. Today we worked up the powder form of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) involving several steps. Our experiment mainly revolved around acid-base chemistry with multiple rounds of filtration, washing and titration. This offered us a chance to review many of the fundamental concepts and techniques that are used in the pharmaceutical industry bench top laboratories in extracting the API from a plant source. It was a great refresher, reminding us a little of organic chemistry and its application. Tomorrow we will continue our work up moving from the powder form to the liquid extract.
